THE OUTDOOR SWIMMING POOL AT THE DOMAINE PROVINCIAL DU BOIS DES REVES

The outdoor pool at Bois des Rêves, located in the provincial domain of Ottignies-Louvain-la-Neuve, was for many years a flagship attraction for families from Walloon Brabant and beyond.

Inaugurated in 1995, it featured a large outdoor pool (depth: 0.60m to 1.40m), a paddling pool for toddlers (depth: 0.10m to 0.40m), a solarium, and a refreshment bar.

For nearly 25 years, this outdoor pool attracted thousands of visitors each summer, providing a refreshing retreat during sunny days. Open exclusively between June and August, it was especially popular during heatwaves, often reaching full capacity in both the parking lot and pool area.

In 2019, the aquatic complex permanently closed its doors. The pools had reached the end of their operational lifespan and required extensive renovations to meet modern safety and energy efficiency standards. A rehabilitation project was proposed, including the construction of a new 25-meter pool, a modernized paddling pool, and a water play area. This project, estimated at over €6 million, included financial support from the Walloon Region. However, plans were disrupted by the Covid-19 pandemic.

In January 2021, the Province of Walloon Brabant officially announced the definitive abandonment of the new outdoor pool project, citing economic constraints worsened by the pandemic. According to Tanguy Stuckens, President of the Provincial College, the pool would have been a financial “black hole,” as it was only operational for two months a year.

Although the pool is no longer available, the site now features a brand-new attraction: the Spray Park at Bois des Rêves.
