About the De Lammekes outdoor pool in Grimbergen
The De Lammekes outdoor pool in Grimbergen, opened in 1976, was once a popular summer destination for residents of the region. This heated pool offered separate areas for both children and adults, attracting many visitors during sunny days.
However, over the years, the pool became a burden for the municipality due to the aging infrastructure and high maintenance costs. Technical issues accumulated, including leaks in water pipes, a malfunctioning access control system, a leaking roof, and a shortage of lifeguards, making its operation increasingly difficult.
In 2017, the pool was open for the last time, and in 2019, the decision was made to permanently close it. Beyond financial difficulties, the pool frequently experienced safety problems, particularly with young visitors from Brussels, necessitating frequent police intervention.
The De Lammekes outdoor pool was completely demolished in 2021 to prevent further vandalism and risks associated with the abandonment of the structure. The site was fenced off after the demolition, awaiting the municipality’s decision on its future, which will continue to have a public focus, although the final project is still under study.
