Presentation of Ixelles swimming pool
The Ixelles municipal swimming pool, a true gem of Brussels’ heritage, reopened in December 2024 after a long renovation period that began in September 2019. Built in 1904 and classified as a heritage site since 2007, it is the oldest swimming pool in the Brussels Region and one of the first in Europe constructed with reinforced concrete.
The renovation project restored its historic charm while modernizing its facilities to provide optimal comfort for swimmers and enhance accessibility. With its 29.20-metre pool and upgraded infrastructure, the Ixelles swimming pool now combines architectural heritage with contemporary amenities.
Managed by the municipality of Ixelles, this iconic pool, which celebrated its centenary on May 16, 2004, remains a landmark of architectural heritage in the Brussels-Capital Region.

- Public access: Last ticket 45 min before the end of each session; out of the water 15 min before the end.
- Visits are limited to 1 hour 30 minutes, counted from entering the cubicle.
- The regulations (art. 5) also set the last entry 45 minutes before closing. Lifeguards may ask swimmers to leave the water earlier, in particular when the pool is very busy.
- Outside opening hours, the pool is reserved for clubs: those sessions are not part of the public hours.
- Closures announced by the municipality: 1 January, 1 November, 11 November, 22 December and 25 December. The official page does not state the year: the 22 December closure is still to be confirmed for 2026.
- Public holidays: 9:30 – 17:30, except on the announced closing days, which take precedence.

Last ticket sale and water exit
The last entry is allowed 45 minutes before closing time to ensure a comfortable and quality swimming experience. Swimmers must exit the pool when the sound signal is given, 15 minutes before closing.
Pool access is limited to 1 hour 30 minutes from the time of entering the changing room.
Note: Opening hours are subject to change by the College of Mayor and Aldermen without prior notice or compensation, especially during authorized events or exceptional circumstances.

Activities offered at Ixelles swimming pool
The Ixelles swimming pool offers public swimming and aquatic activities for adults and children.
Aquatic activities at the Ixelles swimming pool include aquagym classes, senior aquagym classes, private swimming lessons, a children’s swimming school, an adult swimming school. Unlike these activities, children’s birthday parties in the pool are not offered. Other activities include swimming camp, a swimming club and a synchronised swimming club.
Dedicated association sessions – 2026–2027 season
- Emergence XL: Friday, 9pm to 10pm, for women. Check the activity and participation conditions with the organiser.
- FightXLife: Sunday, 5.30pm to 7.30pm, aquaboxing and swimming for women.
- Fat Friendly: Sunday, 7.30pm to 8.30pm, aquagym and swimming for fat adults, with registration required. This session is not women-only.

- Animals on the premises: forbidden. Except assistance animals.
- Child supervision: required; children under 11, accompanied by someone aged 18 or over. Under 7: an adult in the water with the child. Aged 7 to 10: someone aged 18 or over, supervising from the poolside. From age 11: access without an adult, on presentation of an identity card.
- Drinks: forbidden. Except water, in a flask or a plastic bottle.
- Fins, masks, snorkels, balls and other objects in the pool: conditional. With the prior agreement of a lifeguard.
- Pre-swim shower: required. Thoroughly, 3 minutes at most.
- Regulation swimwear: required. Close-fitting swimwear in elastane or polyamide, worn next to the body, in a hygienic and clean material, compatible with public decency and used only for swimming (regulations, art. 26). Authorised swimwear is displayed at the pool entrance.
- Scuba diving accessories: conditional; only during hours reserved for diving clubs.
- Swim cap: required. Except for swimmers who have no hair (regulations, art. 27).
- Swim diaper: required; for children who are not yet toilet-trained, regular diapers not allowed.
- Taking photos: forbidden. Photos and videos: unless prior written agreement has been obtained through the pool management.
- Not allowed: diving in the shallow end, electronic devices in the barefoot area, food, glass objects, razors, running on the poolside, shoes around the pool and in barefoot areas, smoking and static apnea during public opening hours.

Accessibility – Ixelles swimming pool
Accessibility for people with reduced mobility: the entrance is accessible, a lift serves the changing cubicles and the footbath is at floor level. A pool lift chair provides access to the water. Beliris described these facilities when the pool reopened.
Equipment and children: using accessories in the pool requires a lifeguard’s prior approval. Diving-specific equipment is reserved for diving club sessions. Swim nappies are compulsory for children who are not toilet-trained.
Covering swimwear: burkinis and hijabs designed for swimming are allowed. Swimwear or covering suits must be close-fitting, made of elastane or polyamide, clean and exclusively intended for swimming. For safety reasons, the neck must remain uncovered. Outfits with a skirt that hangs away from the body are prohibited. Consult the official regulations for further details.
