Hofstade Beach: A Sports and Leisure Destination Near Brussels

The artificial beach of Hofstade is located in Zemst, in the Flemish Brabant, between Brussels and Antwerp.
Managed by Sport Vlaanderen, the site covers 160 hectares and combines sports, relaxation, and nature in a unique setting.

Along a vast body of water, a 650-meter-long sandy beach welcomes swimming enthusiasts, water sports lovers, and families.
Swimming is allowed from May to mid-September, under the supervision of lifeguards when the green flag is raised.

The site also offers:

  • A natural open-water pool for experienced swimmers,
  • A Water Jump Park for thrill-seekers,
  • Water activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, and pedal boating,
  • A large outdoor playground for children,
  • Hiking trails through a protected natural area,
  • Several food and drink areas with terraces.

In addition to aquatic activities, Hofstade offers a wide range of sports facilities year-round, making it the perfect spot for an active and relaxing day close to Brussels.

Hofstade artificial beach infrastructure:

The artificial beach of Hofstade, stretching 650 meters, offers an ideal setting for swimming and relaxation.
From May to mid-September, swimming is allowed only under supervision when the green flag is raised.

Outside the summer season (mid-September to April), the beach is freely accessible.
Dogs are allowed on the promenade, but must be kept on a leash and are not permitted on the beach.

Around the ponds, hiking trails allow visitors to explore a preserved natural area.
Families will also enjoy the playground and the beach volleyball court.

Hofstade’s open-water pool offers a unique experience by combining nature swimming with safety and supervision.
It is accessible from early May (when the water temperature reaches 16°C) until the end of September.

Swimmers can enjoy lengths of 100 meters or 50 meters.
There is also a free-play water zone for activities such as water polo or kayak polo.

Hofstade’s Water Jump Park offers a spectacular adventure for all ages, in existence since 2025.
It features 3000 m² of floating playgrounds with trampolines, climbing walls, and various obstacles.

The 12-meter-high Xtreme Tower includes 9 slides and 3 diving boards.
For a calmer experience, kayaks, pedal boats, and paddleboards are also available for rental.

Several food and drink areas welcome visitors at Hofstade:

  • Strandbar: Fresh drinks and beach food with terrace seating (no reservation needed).
  • Weekend Brunch: Varied buffet every Saturday and Sunday morning (reservation required).
  • Friday Night BBQ: Grilled meats, salads, and buffet (reservation required).
  • Zomerlust: Colorful self-service bar with snacks and a large outdoor playground.
  • Het Zuiderbad: Seasonal bar by the water, trendy in summer and cosy in winter.

A new water sports complex is being constructed at Hofstade and is scheduled for completion by 2027. It will include an Olympic pool, a wave pool for surfing, and water ski tracks. This €46 million project also encompasses the renovation of the existing outdoor pool.

Designed for elite athletes as well as local swimmers, the complex is expected to host up to 300,000 visitors per year. According to local and sports authorities, it represents a major investment in the region’s development.

Construction began in 2022, with the project’s completion planned for 2027.

Open on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays from 1:00 PM to 7:00 PM.
Ticket office closes at 6:00 PM, beach evacuation at 6:45 PM.

High season: from June 17 to August 31

Open every day from 11:00 AM to 8:00 PM.

Low season: from September 1 to September 15

Winter season: from September 16 to April 30

As the warmer days approach, Hofstade beach becomes highly popular, attracting many visitors from both Brussels and Flanders.

Ticket sales organisation

To access the beach area, purchasing a ticket in advance through the designated online booking platform is mandatory (see below in the price section). Tickets can only be purchased from April 30.

Important:

  • Tickets are non-refundable and non-exchangeable.
  • Children under 2 years old enter for free and do not require a reservation.

Required documents:

  • Purchased ticket(s).
  • ID card (required from age 15).

Without these documents, access to the beach will be denied without the possibility of a refund.

Locker usage:

  • Standard lockers: €1 deposit (refundable).
  • Lockers with smartphone charging stations: €2 (non-refundable).

The Hofstade domain offers sporting activities for adults and children.

The Hofstade domain provides a wide range of services for sports activities and accommodations. Facilities include meeting rooms, a gymnasium, outdoor sports fields with locker rooms, and various activities such as kayaking, windsurfing, mountain biking, climbing, and adventure courses for all ages.

Accommodations are available for one or more nights, with meal plans that include breakfast, lunch, and dinner, offering standard or premium menus.

Water quality

The water quality at Hofstade beach is monitored weekly throughout the year.
Since 2015, historical data confirms excellent water quality, making it perfectly safe for swimming.

Hofstade beach regulations

The Hofstade beach regulations include several important rules to ensure swimmers’ safety.

  • Swimming is prohibited outside supervised bathing areas or near a red flag.
  • The beach is a non-smoking area. A designated smoking zone is located next to the lifeguard station.
  • Dogs and other pets are not allowed on the beach. In low season (September–April), they are allowed on the promenade but must be kept on a leash.
  • Bicycles are not permitted inside the beach area during the high season.
  • Portable radios or other music devices must not be played loudly, disturbing other visitors.
  • Visitors must behave respectfully towards others.
  • It is forbidden to act in a way that compromises or risks compromising your own safety or health or that of others.
  • It is prohibited:
    • to barbecue or light fires,
    • to bring and/or use water hoses,
    • to bring spirits or distilled alcoholic beverages,
    • to bring glass bottles and containers,
    • to possess drugs, even below three grams, for personal use.

The center’s manager or their substitute may deny access to anyone posing health or safety risks to others.
Violations of the regulations may result in temporary or permanent exclusion.
