The Ixelles swimming pool has been closed for 5 years

Closed since 2019 for extensive renovation work, the municipal swimming pool of Ixelles, built in 1904, is finally set to welcome the public again by the end of 2024.
After multiple delays, the final adjustments are underway, including filling the pool and verifying technical systems. The municipality hopes for a definitive reopening by December.

Renovation and preservation of a heritage site

The renovation of this historic swimming pool, one of the oldest bathing establishments in Brussels, cost nearly €8.5 million. Beliris, the lead contractor, meticulously restored the structure to preserve its heritage authenticity, drawing inspiration from a historic photograph dating back to 1940.

The new glass roof now bathes the pool in natural light, surrounded by cast-iron columns and faithfully recreated changing cabins, which had gradually disappeared over the years. Every detail was carefully designed to honor the building’s listed status, including the restoration of the original concrete forming the pool basin.

Modernisation and Accessibility

In addition to preservation efforts, the pool has been modernised to meet current safety and accessibility standards. Facilities for people with reduced mobility have been added, and modern water treatment systems are being finalized to ensure optimal water quality. Outdoor amenities are also nearing completion ahead of the public reopening.

A long-awaited reopening

After a series of delays and complications, the residents of Ixelles eagerly await the reopening of this historic swimming pool.
Initially planned for summer 2022, the completion of the renovations was postponed several times due to constraints related to heritage conservation and unexpected challenges during construction. Despite these hurdles, the municipality and Beliris confirm that the pool will be ready to open its doors by the end of 2024, offering swimmers a space that is both modern and rich in history.

The imminent reopening marks a new chapter for this iconic pool, originally built for Brussels’ working class and now embodying a unique blend of history and modernity. The municipality hopes this project will provide residents with a sustainable swimming facility, ready to endure for the century to come.
