About the Neptunium swimming pool in Schaerbeek

Located between the Josaphat Park and the Schaerbeek Town Hall, the Schaerbeek public swimming pool, better known as Neptunium, is a true symbol of the modernist architecture of the 1950s. Inaugurated in 1953 and expanded in 1957, it stands out with its 33-meter swimming pool, originally built to meet the Olympic standards of the time.

The renovation of the Neptunium pool, completed in September 2023, only concerned the swimming area. Other facilities, such as the cafeteria and the gym, are planned for future renovations.

The facilities include a main pool, a learning pool, and an indoor solarium equipped with several lounge chairs for relaxation after swimming.

Since the recent renovations, the pool no longer features a slide, a 3-meter diving board, nor a sauna or steam room. Additionally, it does not offer a paddling pool for young children.

In terms of safety and comfort, recent works have modernised the facility while respecting its original architecture. Changing rooms adapted for families and people with reduced mobility have been fitted out, and a high-performance surveillance system with underwater and aerial cameras has been installed to guarantee swimmers’ safety.

With its style inspired by “Paquebot” architecture and unique features, such as the Murano glass mosaic by Géo de Vlamynck and a copper sculpture by Stan Hensen, the Neptunium pool remains an emblematic place, combining history and modernity, welcoming young and old in a warm and safe atmosphere.

Water Quality

The Schaerbeek swimming pool, Le Neptunium, stands out for the exceptional quality of its water, thanks to the use of ozone to reduce the amount of combined chlorine. This process guarantees purer, more pleasant water for swimmers. Since 2012, this pool has regularly featured among the cleanest establishments in Brussels.

This ranking is established every year by Brulabo, the intercommunal laboratory, which rigorously assesses the water quality of Brussels’ swimming pools. The Neptunium thus maintains its position as a benchmark for aquatic hygiene and well-being.
