Hofstade beach closed on July 2: a disappearance casts shadow over the site

A deeply concerning disappearance

On Wednesday, July 2, the Hofstade beach (Sport Vlaanderen), one of Flanders’ most popular outdoor swimming spots, will be exceptionally closed to the public. This decision follows a serious incident: the unexplained disappearance of a 19-year-old man on Tuesday afternoon.

The young man, named Adam, had visited the site with friends. Shortly before 4 p.m., as the group was preparing to leave, they discovered his belongings (clothes, phone, and bag) left behind near the water, with no sign of Adam. Alarmed, they contacted the authorities, who confirmed he had not returned home either.

Extensive rescue resources deployed

Later that day, a large-scale search operation was launched. Two teams of divers were deployed to scour the lake, while a federal police helicopter and drones provided aerial support. The shoreline was also combed in hopes of finding any clues. According to the Hal-Vilvoorde public prosecutor’s office, the situation is considered “very worrying”, and all scenarios remain on the table — though drowning is being seriously considered.

Adam’s parents, visibly distressed, arrived at the scene early in the morning. They shared that their son was a capable swimmer but had a medical history that could point to a possible fainting spell.

To allow rescue services to continue their efforts in safe conditions, the domain has decided to close its doors entirely for July 2. Visitors who had booked tickets for that day will receive a refund, with instructions to be sent via email. Sports camps scheduled at the site will still take place but with an adjusted program.
