A tragedy at the heart of the recreational site

On Wednesday, July 2, the beach at the Sport Vlaanderen domain in Hofstade remained exceptionally closed to the public. The decision was made to allow emergency services to continue a large-scale search operation that began the day before, following the disappearance of a 19-year-old man from Lembeek (Flemish Brabant).

Adam had arrived at the site on Tuesday afternoon with friends. Shortly before 4 p.m., as the group was preparing to leave, they noticed that his personal belongings (clothes, phone, and bag) were left behind on the beach near the supervised swimming area. Concerned, they alerted authorities. After confirming with his parents that Adam hadn’t returned home, the situation was deemed critical.

A large-scale emergency response

A major search operation was launched Tuesday evening. Two diving teams took turns scouring the lakebed, while a federal police helicopter and drones conducted aerial sweeps. Firefighters, local police, and Civil Protection units were deployed across the site, which was partially sealed off to facilitate the search.

The search resumed early Wednesday with renewed intensity. A human chain was formed along the lakeshore, reflecting the growing solidarity around this tragic event. It was ultimately a diver who discovered Adam’s lifeless body on Wednesday afternoon. The news deeply affected the family, visitors, and staff present at the domain.

Site to reopen partially on July 3

The Hofstade domain will reopen to the public on Thursday, July 3, but under adjusted conditions. Entry will be limited and some areas will remain closed as a mark of respect to those affected. Visitors with tickets for July 2 will be fully refunded. Scheduled sports camps will proceed with adapted programming if needed.

The management of the site expressed their heartfelt condolences to Adam’s family and friends. They also extended their gratitude to all emergency teams for their commitment, professionalism, and tireless efforts during this difficult time.
