Necessary renovation to preserve historical heritage
The Victor Boin Pool in Saint-Gilles, inaugurated in 1905 and a symbol of Brussels’ architectural heritage, will remain closed for major renovation work until early 2026. This decision, driven by waterproofing issues and safety requirements, marks the second phase of renovations following an initial intervention in 2017.
The pool basin, which has suffered significant damage over time, is plagued by recurring leaks that affect the underground infrastructure, causing structural corrosion. These renovations aim to restore the basin while preserving its heritage character. Jean Spinette, Mayor of Saint-Gilles, emphasized the importance of maintaining the authenticity of the pool by using traditional tiles rather than a stainless-steel tank, in order to respect the Art Deco architectural style from the 1938–1940 renovation.
Additional Improvements to the Victor Boin Pool
Beyond the pool basin, other changes will be made to meet modern hygiene standards. The new plan includes adding foot baths at the pool entrance, modernising the changing rooms, and creating a collective changing area for school groups and associations.
The pool’s exterior façade, marked by cracks and currently supported by props, will also be restored to ensure its structural integrity. Additionally, in an effort to improve the facility’s energy efficiency, solar panels will be installed to reduce the pool’s energy consumption.
Renovation funded primarily by the municipality of Saint-Gilles
À ce jour, la réouverture de la piscine reste toujours prévue pour le premier trimestre de 2026.
With a total budget of approximately €14 million, financed in part by Saint-Gilles’ own funds and a loan supported by the Region, this ambitious project aims to preserve a jewel of Brussels’ heritage while modernising it for future generations. The renovation seeks to safeguard this historic site while providing the residents of Saint-Gilles (and Brussels) with a modern and accessible aquatic space.
As of now, the pool’s reopening is still scheduled for the first quarter of 2026.
